B-Day Braids

Whenever I wear my hair in braids I constantly get asked, “Did you braid your hair yourself?”. Uhh, yeah. I did. It’s quite easy to do too. Hearing this question, laced with all of this doubt, leaves me baffled at the amount of the long-haired women who, obviously, don’t know how to braid their own hair!

Lord, Bless These Women!!

To be honest, I taught myself. One year I got grounded from two weeks before I took the EOG’s to the time I went back to school the following school year. (YES EOG’s, I was a rebel in 7th grade, okay?!) I had nothing to do once summer rolled around. My father cancelled our pool membership and taken the internet cable out of the phone line. This old school punishment left me really tan, and really well adjusted to high pony-tails with flawless cheer bows, and a liquid eyeliner pro. Among those strenuous accomplishments I was experimenting with numerous hair styles. The braid being one of them.

I started in small sections, just to pass the time. Once I mastered straight braiding technique I evolved into French braids. Note: anything French is pretty fabulous so I knew from birth I had to learn this. They are pretty tricky, and require a lot of attention to detail. It’s mostly my short attention span that leads to my own personal frustration and a simple  top knot.

French Braiding Simple Steps:

  1. gather 3 sections of hair at the top of the braid
  2. do a simle braid for 2 rotations
  3. gather hair for each piece** and add into original braid
  4. repeat steps 1-3

**you begin to see here that your hands are not coordinated enough for this. JUST KEEP GOING!

Today I had to attend a child’s 5th birthday party and had zero time to wash my hair between studying and grabbing coffee before this shin dig. French braids are my favorite for camouflaging dirty hair. Here, I did four small French braids into the back of my head and secured with bobby pins. Once your braids are secured tightly, go through your braid and almost pull it apart to make it bigger and look fuller.

BOOM.

You now have one rad hairstyle that will cause too many people to ask you “Did you braid your hair yourself?”. Welcome to my club. We wear whatever we want, as long as it’s black.
